How to choose a headlamp for work, running, camping and emergencies

Choose a headlamp by the beam and runtime you will actually use, then check weight, fit, controls, battery type and IP protection. Maximum lumens alone do not predict comfort or useful working time.

The best headlamp is not simply the one with the highest lumen figure. Choose by beam shape, useful runtime, comfort, controls, weather protection and power source. A workshop, a fast forest trail and a power cut ask for different things, even when the maximum output looks similar.

Choose the task before the brightness

Start by naming the main use. This prevents paying for a feature that looks impressive but adds little value in practice.

  • Hands-free work: prioritise a broad near-field beam, a stable tilt angle, simple controls and resistance to dust or rain.
  • Running: prioritise low weight, a secure strap, balanced beam shape and controls that can be used while moving.
  • Camping and hiking: look for several brightness levels, a low mode, predictable battery indication and a power source that fits the length of the trip.
  • Emergency use: prioritise easy storage, a charge indicator, a low-output mode for long use and controls that are understandable under stress.

Lumens: maximum output is only one mode

A headline lumen value normally describes the brightest mode. That mode may have the shortest runtime and may reduce output as the lamp heats up or the battery voltage falls. Compare the modes you will actually use, not only “turbo” or “maximum”.

For close work, too much light can create glare from white walls, tools or reflective surfaces. A lower mode often gives better visual comfort and longer runtime. High output is most useful when briefly identifying a distant object or moving quickly over uneven ground.

Beam shape: spot, flood or both

A focused spot reaches farther and helps reveal obstacles ahead. A flood beam spreads light across the hands and peripheral area. Combination headlamps can provide both, but check whether the beams can be controlled separately and what happens to runtime when both are on.

For electrical cabinets, vehicle work and maintenance, a wide, even near beam is often more useful than a dramatic long throw. For trail running, a blend of near-field width and forward reach helps the eyes read both the next step and the path ahead.

Runtime: compare the right mode and test method

Runtime is inseparable from brightness. A statement such as “up to eight hours” is useful only when you know which mode produced it. Also check whether output is stabilised or gradually decreases during the test.

For a workday or longer trip, plan around a normal medium or low mode and keep reserve capacity. Rechargeable models are convenient for frequent use; a replaceable battery can be helpful when charging access is uncertain. Never substitute a different battery chemistry or size unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.

Comfort and weight

Every gram is carried on the head. A heavy lamp can be acceptable for stationary work but uncomfortable during running. Check the complete operating weight, including the battery, and how the strap distributes it.

A top strap can improve stability on heavier models. A breathable strap and compact housing help with longer use. If you wear a helmet, verify that the mounting arrangement is compatible rather than assuming a standard fabric strap will stay secure.

Controls, indicators and red light

Good controls reduce mode cycling. Separate buttons for a spot and flood beam can be easier than stepping through every mode. A lockout function helps prevent accidental activation in a bag. A clear battery indicator is more useful than discovering an empty battery when the light dims.

Red light can preserve dark adaptation and reduce disturbance around a campsite, but it is not a substitute for adequate white task light. Gesture sensors can be useful with gloves or dirty hands, although accidental activation should be considered in tight workspaces.

IP rating and physical durability

Read the two-digit IP code: the first digit covers solids and dust; the second covers water. IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets, but not suitable for immersion. If a model claims immersion protection, check the manufacturer’s exact depth and duration conditions.

Also consider drop testing, lens material, temperature range and whether charging-port covers must be fully closed to maintain protection. An IP rating does not protect a lamp from incorrect charging, damaged seals or unsuitable battery replacement.

Two current Nordeks examples

The VIDEX VLF-H085-OR is a compact 72 g headlamp with separate main and near-light controls, red modes, USB-C charging and IP65 protection. VIDEX specifies up to 400 lm when its main and COB light operate together. It is a practical example of a lightweight mixed-beam design.

The VIDEX VLF-H025C uses a focused main light plus a 120° COB near light, adds gesture control, and carries IP65 protection. VIDEX specifies up to 310 lm with the combined beam. It is a useful example for work where hands-free switching and broad close-range illumination matter.

Charging and safety

Use the charging input and cable type specified by the manufacturer. Keep charging contacts and ports dry, and close protective covers before exposing the lamp to dust or moisture. VIDEX instructs that the two examples above must not be used while charging. Do not open or replace a built-in battery during the warranty period unless the manual expressly permits it.
